Athens: Resistance, Memory, and the Making of Democracy
On 5–6 October 2026, FREI project partner Evropaiki Ekfrasi is hosting a two-day local event in Greece, bringing together young participants to explore the country's turbulent path from occupation and dictatorship to democracy and European integration.
Working with two schools — one from a regional area, one from Athens — participants will examine two defining periods of modern Greek history: the resistance and Civil War during and after World War II, and the years of the military Junta leading up to the restoration of the Republic. Drawing on archival sources, eyewitness testimonies, and visits to sites of historical memory, the event treats history not as a fixed narrative, but as a living field directly connected to the present.
Writers, artists, academics, and living protagonists will contribute to discussions on population exchange and migration, the role of women and young people in the resistance, and the longer legacy of fascism and occupation on Greek society and democratic culture.
The event opens with a short introductory video created by participants themselves — a first step in making the experience visible beyond the room.
Further information and event outcomes will be available in the project guidebook.
