Empowering Local Voices on the Path to EU Integration

Highlights from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s First National Participation Day

On 13 May 2025, Sarajevo hosted Bosnia and Herzegovina’s first National Participation Day, gathering civil society actors, public authorities, and international partners to explore how local engagement can strengthen the country’s path toward EU membership. Organized in cooperation with the Directorate for European Integration and the Local Democracy Agency Mostar, the event placed a spotlight on the role of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) in supporting this process.

The discussions focused on the contribution of civil society and local communities in key areas such as environmental protection, cultural heritage, reconciliation, and citizen participation. Participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina were joined by guests from Montenegro, Austria, Ukraine, DG REGIO, the Danube Strategy Point, and EUSDR Priority Area 10.

This National Participation Day also served as a stepping stone toward the 12th Danube Participation Day and the 14th EUSDR Annual Forum, both to be held under Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Presidency.
