On 23 June 2026, the FREI project's Austrian National Path event brought together historical remembrance and contemporary dialogue in Vienna. Students from Gymnasium Neusiedl am See explored the site of the former NS "Central Office for Jewish Emigration" before joining a public discussion at the Bruno Kreisky Forum on Austria's path to EU membership and women's experiences of democratic transition in Spain — connecting the hard work of confronting the past with the ongoing project of European integration.

The Austrian local path traces how the country rebuilt its institutions, confronted the legacy of National Socialism, and gradually anchored itself in the European community. It shows democracy not as a given, but as the result of sustained effort, societal learning, and persistent civic commitment — a heritage and responsibility passed on to the next generations.
