We Inspire Tolerance – Never-Ending Shoah Story Remembrance

WITNESS-REM is an EU-funded project addressing three converging challenges in Europe today:

widening gaps in historical knowledge about the Holocaust
rising antisemitism, and the
growing risk of distortion and denial as the generation of survivors passes.

It is an initiative that serves to preserve the memory of the Holocaust, transfer historical knowledge, and take action against hatred, antisemitism, and distortion of historical facts.

Funded under the CERV programme (CERV-2025-CITIZENS-REM-HOLOCAUSTJEW), the project runs from 2026 to 2028 and unites six organisations from five countries — Hungary, Austria, Germany, Ukraine, and Portugal — in a transnational consortium built for the widest possible European cooperation, both horizontally across countries and vertically across generations.

What sets WITNESS-REM apart is its scale and its method. Structured around 26 work packages, of which 21 unfold in situ and 5 online, the project connects 15 memorial sites and cities across seven countries — including Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Mauthausen, Ravensbrück, Budapest, and Vienna. Rather than treating remembrance as a purely historical exercise, WITNESS-REM combines on-site study visits, urban memory initiatives, and intergenerational dialogue with innovative digital tools, creating a peer-to-peer learning environment that speaks directly to young people aged 13–22, descendants of survivors, and the wider public.

The project officially launches on 30 October 2026 in Cascais, Portugal— the European Capital of Democracy 2026 — bringing together the partner network for study visits, digital initiatives, and dialogue formats designed to keep the Shoah story alive for future generations and to strengthen democratic resilience across Europe.
